The Masia Maths and Science Academy (MSSA) in partnership with the S.A Medical & Education Foundation (SAME) has officially launched a project that will support 13 schools in Masia, a rural village in Limpopo.
What was formerly known as Masia Primary School, will now be known as the MMSA, a specialised academy for Mathematics and Science development. The project will benefit the immediate and surrounding communities with over 2000 learners in both primary and secondary schools.
Currently, South Africa is not producing enough school leavers who are competent in mathematics and science, this is a critical crisis that needs to be addressed urgently if South Africa is to produce the human capital needed to drive economic growth and create new industries in the future. The academy aims to see an improvement in academic performance and an uptake in Mathematics and Science subjects, a much-needed cause, especially in rural communities. An official project launch was held at the Masia Primary school, Friday, 9th November 2018 and was attended by the community, learners, the Dept, of Science and Technology and various stakeholders.
“The mandate of the Foundation is to provide quality education to all.” states Tyrone Pols, Spokesperson of SAME. SAME Foundation will be launching a campaign to raise R3.5 Million for the project starting on Monday, 12th November 2018. The Foundation will be establishing, equipping and resourcing four science laboratories, three maths classrooms and an administration area as the first phase of the project. “The days are long gone that children should travel long hours to access quality education and with that in mind, the SAME Foundation looks forward to walking this journey with the academy to develop a centre of excellence. The benefit of this projects doesn’t stop here, it will unlock sustainable access to the economy for our future generations.” ended Pols
In his closing remark, the Chief of Vembe, Chief Thovhele Vho Nthumeni Masia expressed his gratitude to SAME Foundation and all the various stakeholders. “The best way to deal with poverty is through education. People who have always been here in the rural areas with no access to quality education and resources can now access quality education and be given the necessary tools to better their lives.”
