The Loeriesfontein community recently celebrated the launch of its new Thusong Service Centre, a crucial step towards improving residents’ access to essential government services. Launched in partnership with the Northern Cape Office of the Premier, and the Government Communication and Information System (GCIS), the centre brings critical services and information closer to the community, reinforcing a commitment to bettering lives and supporting local development.
Deputy Minister in the Presidency Mr. Kenny Morolong along with the representatives of the Namakwa District Municipality, and the Mayor of Hantam Local Municipality, were among the esteemed guests present at this event, which was made possible through collaborative efforts between government stakeholders and funding from Loeriesfontein and Khobab Wind Farms.
“The launch of the Centre marked the first Thusong Centre to be launched in the 30 years of democracy. This is a huge milestone for the programme which perfected the development communication approach wherein many community projects and initiatives have been undertaken to alleviate poverty, create local job opportunities and community participation at the Centre,” stated Louis Botha of GCIS.
He added, “The Thusong Centre brings much-needed services and information closer to the community and spares them the 150 Kms they must travel to Calvinia to access government services.”
Formerly known as the Loeriesfontein Business Hub, the centre will continue to provide essential services while expanding its role as a pivotal community resource. Government departments such as the Department of Home Affairs, SASSA, the Department of Social Development, the Department of Employment & Labour, and other critical departments will now render services from this modern facility. This ensures residents have convenient access to vital services including social grants, home affairs assistance, labour-related support, and more.
To ensure long-term sustainability, the wind farms have committed to a 14-year support plan for the centre.
“In addition to the government services, the centre will continue to offer existing services such as an internet café, Wi-Fi, venue hire, printing services, and business registration. This initiative not only reinforces the commitment to enhancing public service accessibility but also supports local economic activities and digital connectivity,” explained Vanessa Fredericks, Economic Development Manager for Loeriesfontein Wind Farm and Khobab Wind Farm.
