A female farmer from Hertzogville is making significant strides toward entering South Africa’s commercial food market, thanks to targeted infrastructure support from Boshof Solar Power.
Maria Tswayi (51), who owns and manages Scheerpan Farm—a mixed livestock farm with over 200 cattle, goats, and sheep—has received critical funding to restore her solar power system. The intervention will ensure reliable access to energy for water pumping, household needs, and farm connectivity, all vital for livestock care and daily operations.
This support forms part of a broader initiative to help small-scale farmers overcome the barriers to commercialisation, particularly in rural areas. The programme not only provides infrastructure upgrades but also includes mentorship and long-term guidance until 2028.
Tswayi was previously recognised in a national programme for her contributions as an emerging female farmer. Now, with stable power, she is one step closer to growing her business and contributing to the region’s food security.
“For a long time, I struggled on my own,” said Tswayi. “This kind of help motivates me to work even harder—not just for myself, but to make a difference in my community.”
According to Noluthando Mazibuko, Economic Development Specialist at Boshof Solar Power, supporting high-potential rural entrepreneurs like Tswayi drives job creation and strengthens food systems. “Women like Maria reinvest in their families and communities. That amplifies the developmental impact of this kind of enterprise support,” Mazibuko said.
The initiative aligns with Boshof Solar Power’s commitment to inclusive economic development and the empowerment of women in agriculture. The expected ripple effects include increased demand for local services such as animal feed, veterinary care, fencing, and transport—stimulating broader microenterprise growth across the Tokologo region.
Scheerpan Farm is also set to become a demonstration site for other emerging farmers, serving as a model of what’s possible with the right support and infrastructure.
