The International Telecommunications Union (ITU) and UN Women launched the African Girls Can Code Initiative (AGCCI) at a 10-day camp in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The camp hosted 88 girls from over 30 African countries.
AGCCI is a four-year programme that focuses on training girls in coding, programming, creation, and design. AGCCI aims to grow career prospects for African women by closing the current wide digital gender gap.
Letty Chiwara, UN Women Representative in Ethiopia, the AU and the UN Economic Commission for Africa says, “By teaching coding and other digital skills to young women, we can reduce youth unemployment and accelerate the achievement of the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals” as adopted by the UN in 2015.
Rebecca Azanaw, a participant of the coding camp says, “I am very proud that I got to be one of the first African Girls to do the camp. That was a chance for me to start coding seriously.
The AGCCI brings together girl from across the continent to develop their interest in ICT and produce young, innovative women in Africa.
