$750m set for schools as COVID-19 support

Zimbabwe schools have officially opened and is set to receive $750m COVID-19 support. The money will be used for the procurement of COVID-19 personal protective equipment (PPE).

Schools were officially opened on the 15 of March after a long break due to the coronavirus. World Health Organisation (WHO) has been supporting African Education and Heath as well. It has stipulated COVID-19 necessities to ensure the safety of pupils and teachers.

Schools around the country have benefitted from the China vaccine doses. Some schools were vaccinated a month before the official opening.  However, some schools are still in a fix and are still struggling with financial constraints.

Community members and many more sponsors have come together in preparing for the schools opening. Less privileged children were given groceries to take to school with. The groceries included 2ltr mazoe juice, 5kg biscuits, cereals and many other unspecified groceries given to each student.

When asked to comment, Progressive Teachers Union of Zimbabwe president Takavafira Zhou said: “Together with the students, we are happy to finally open schools after a long break although we are struggling to ease financial constraints and accumulated debts since they used their own money last year to buy sanitisers among other related COVID-19 materials, the government has not refunded the money yet.”
