ECOSOCC engages with Zimbabwean and South African civil society on the ending of sanctions against Zimbabwe

A delegation of civil society leaders from Zimbabwe , led by the Patron of the Zimbabwe Amalgamated Council of Churches, Mr Jimayi Muduviri, along with ECOSOCC National Representation for Zimbabwe, recently came together to discuss the matter of mobilizing the region and African Union for the escalated call to remove sanctions in Zimbabwe. The meeting is took place in Johannesburg, South Africa.

As is on record, in Decision Assembly/AU/Dec.219(XII) of 2009 the AU Assembly called for the immediate lifting of the sanctions on Zimbabwe to ease the economic and humanitarian situation in the country. This call was reiterated by the African Union in 2013.

The African Union’s Economic,Social and Cultural Council (ECOSOCC) Deputy Presiding Officer ,Pat Malisa  began the engagement along with other leaders of civil society from South Africa in order to start a regional wide effort into the mobilization of support of the efforts to have this call escalated towards action, and have a communique produced on the impact of sanctions not only on Zimbabwe, but the Southern region as a whole.
