Safe Toilets Restore School Dignity

WeSolve4x is calling for urgent support to replace dangerous pit toilets in Eastern Cape schools, after witnessing how unsafe sanitation threatens young learners.

WeSolve4x has launched a school sanitation drive aimed at replacing hazardous pit toilets in Eastern Cape schools with safe, dignified facilities.

The intervention follows an incident in which WeSolve4x CEO Tsietsi Ngobese witnessed a learner fall into a pit toilet while visiting a school to launch a mathematics programme.

“No child should have to risk their life for a basic human right like sanitation,” said Ngobese. “We cannot teach mathematics to children who are terrified of the very facilities they use during their break.”

The campaign supports the national SAFE Initiative, which was created to replace unsafe school pit toilets with proper sanitation facilities. The Department of Basic Education says the initiative is focused on providing toilets that meet school infrastructure norms and standards.

In the Eastern Cape, the challenge remains urgent. Premier Oscar Mabuyane recently confirmed that 427 schools in the province still rely on pit toilets, with plans to eradicate 300 in 2026.

WeSolve4x says its work at Babheke Primary School in Lusikisiki, supported by Old Mutual, will serve as a model for a wider rollout. The organisation has identified 23 high-priority schools requiring immediate intervention.

The project is not only about infrastructure, but about dignity, safety and creating learning environments where children can focus on education without fear.
