Recycled Plastic Builds Public Infrastructure

A new circular manufacturing solution is transforming difficult-to-recycle plastic waste into durable public infrastructure, demonstrating how innovation can convert environmental challenges into practical urban solutions.

As global plastic waste surpasses 400 million tonnes annually, multi-layer plastic (MLP) remains one of the most complex waste streams to recycle due to its layered composition of mixed materials.

A new innovation from India is offering a practical solution to this challenge. Mumbai-based Jyoti World Pvt. Ltd. has introduced INFIN ReBench, a modular outdoor seating system manufactured entirely from recycled multi-layer plastic waste, demonstrating how low-value waste can be repurposed into long-life infrastructure products.

Multi-layer plastic is widely used in food packaging and consumer goods, but its complex structure has traditionally limited recycling options. Advances in polymer processing are now enabling manufacturers to convert this material into high-performance components suitable for public infrastructure applications.

Unlike conventional materials such as wood, metal or concrete, recycled polymer-based seating solutions offer resistance to corrosion, termites and weather exposure while requiring minimal maintenance. These characteristics make them suitable for high-traffic environments such as parks, campuses, transport hubs and urban public spaces.

The INFIN ReBench solution has already been tested in real-world conditions, with more than 100 benches installed at PLASTINDIA 2026 in New Delhi. The installation provided a live demonstration of durability and performance as thousands of visitors used the seating during the exhibition.

The product has also been showcased at The India AI Impact Summit 2026, highlighting the growing relevance of circular economy solutions that combine material innovation with infrastructure development.

Designed in a modular format, the benches can be shipped in completely knocked-down (CKD) form, allowing efficient transportation, easier installation and the ability to replace individual components if required. This design approach supports scalability across multiple regions while reducing long-term maintenance costs.

Circular infrastructure solutions are gaining attention globally as cities seek sustainable alternatives that reduce landfill waste while supporting resilient urban development. Products manufactured from recycled materials provide opportunities to extend material lifecycles and reduce environmental impact across municipal projects.

Jyoti World Pvt. Ltd., established in 1959, specialises in polymer processing, contract manufacturing and engineering-driven material solutions, with increasing focus on sustainability-led innovation.

As urban areas continue to address both waste management and infrastructure needs, circular design approaches such as INFIN ReBench illustrate how environmental challenges can be transformed into long-term development opportunities.
