SAB, Henley Strengthen Local Retail Communities

South African Breweries (SAB), in partnership with Henley Business School Africa, has launched the SAB Retailer University, a flagship development programme aimed at strengthening small retailers and driving sustainable growth across communities.

Delivered over 12 months, the initiative combines in-person learning, practical assignments and personalised guidance to equip retailers with critical skills in financial management, operations, marketing and leadership. The inaugural cohort includes 30 established retailers from across South Africa, each with strong growth potential and demonstrated community impact.

“Retailers are the backbone of South Africa’s beer economy and vital anchors in the communities they serve,” said Zoleka Lisa, Vice President of Corporate Affairs at SAB. “Through Retailer University, SAB is investing directly in the people who power our industry — equipping them with the capability and confidence to grow responsibly.”

Henley Business School Africa, part of the University of Reading (UK), designed and delivers the programme, offering globally accredited learning aligned to higher education standards. Participants will receive a recognised certificate upon completion.

Beyond technical training, the programme includes mentorship, peer networks and structured accountability to ensure practical application and measurable outcomes. By strengthening financial discipline and leadership capability, the initiative aims to help retailers scale sustainably, create jobs and build more resilient businesses.

“We are proud to partner with SAB on an initiative that strengthens the backbone of local economies,” said Linda Buckley, Pro-Dean: Teaching and Learning and Student Experience at Henley Business School Africa.

The first cohort began earlier this year, reflecting SAB’s continued focus on enterprise development, economic inclusion and long-term community impact across South Africa.
