MultiChoice Expands School Sport Access

MultiChoice Group has handed over a new multipurpose sports court in Mahikeng, expanding safe school sport infrastructure and supporting youth development, health, and community cohesion in under-resourced areas.

MultiChoice Group has officially handed over a multipurpose sports court to St Mary’s Secondary School in Mahikeng through its SuperSport Schools Playing Fields Project.

The facility will support seven-a-side soccer, netball, modified hockey and volleyball, providing learners with access to quality sporting infrastructure within a safe school environment.

Research shows that grassroots sport programmes play a vital role in under-resourced communities, contributing to social cohesion, improved physical and mental health, stronger educational engagement and long-term economic opportunity.

“Access to sport plays an important role in how young people grow, learn and connect,” said Keabetswe Modimoeng, Director of Public Affairs for English and Portuguese-speaking Africa at MultiChoice Group. “When learners are engaged in structured sport, they are more likely to feel a sense of belonging, stay active, and develop confidence and discipline that extends beyond the field.”

Participation in organised sport has also been linked to improved focus, better school attendance and reduced dropout rates, alongside health benefits such as lower risks of lifestyle-related diseases and improved mental wellbeing.

The handover follows the participation of St Mary’s educators in a four-day physical education workshop delivered through the Premier Skills Teacher Training syllabus, equipping teachers to deliver inclusive and safe physical education lessons.

“We would like to once again thank MultiChoice Group for its continued support of our school and the wider community,” said Ramolefe Boitumelo, Deputy Principal of St Mary’s Secondary School. “This field is not only an asset for our school, but for the wider community. It creates a positive environment for our learners and reinforces the importance of keeping young people active, engaged and focused.”

The court forms part of MultiChoice Group’s Let’s Play initiative, through which more than R40 million has been invested in school sport across South Africa, reaching over 117,000 children nationwide in 2025.

By investing in school sport and community infrastructure, MultiChoice Group continues to support healthier, more connected communities and expand opportunities for young people to thrive.
