The Action Sports Arena at Key West Shopping Centre in Krugersdorp came alive with colour, laughter and excitement as Sesame Workshop South Africa hosted its 2025 Sesame Sports Challenge — a vibrant celebration of teamwork, learning and the organisation’s 25-year legacy of helping children grow smarter, stronger and kinder.
The atmosphere buzzed with anticipation as teams, families and supporters gathered for a day where competition met community. The event formed part of a broader national celebration of Takalani Sesame’s 25th anniversary, marking a quarter century of inspiring South African children through inclusive education and joyful learning.
In her welcoming remarks, Dr Onyi Nwaneri, Managing Director of Sesame Workshop South Africa, reflected on how collaboration has been central to the organisation’s journey.
“For 25 years, Sesame Workshop South Africa has built its impact through collaboration — with educators, parents, corporates and communities who believe in the power of play to transform children’s lives,” said Dr Nwaneri. “This celebration is not only about our journey, but about the collective effort that continues to make learning joyful, inclusive and accessible.”
The programme featured spirited soccer and netball tournaments, with teams from across the corporate and development sectors taking to the courts and fields. On the netball court, Jozi My Jozi and Proconics faced off in a closely contested final that kept spectators on edge. After several fast-paced quarters filled with sharp passing and defensive play, Jozi My Jozi claimed the win — to enthusiastic applause from the stands.
Over on the soccer pitch, the competition was equally intense. The SABC team emerged victorious after a gripping final match with Soul Leadership Blue that ended in a penalty shoot-out. The winning goal sparked cheers, handshakes and smiles from players and spectators alike, capturing the camaraderie and fair-play spirit that defined the day.
While the sports matches commanded plenty of attention, the children’s activity zone proved to be just as popular. The area offered playful learning stations, art corners and interactive games designed around Sesame Workshop’s core themes of kindness, friendship and inclusion. Laughter echoed as children painted, built structures and played team games — a reminder that learning happens most naturally through play.
A highlight for everyone was the official appearance of Elmo, the lovable red monster from Takalani Sesame. As he entered the arena, the crowd erupted into cheers. Elmo danced, waved and posed for photos, his joyful presence delighting children and adults alike. His warmth and humour embodied the essence of Sesame Workshop’s mission — making learning fun, memorable and full of heart.
The event also shone a spotlight on collaboration in early-childhood development. Victory Kids Pre-School and Aftercare, showcased in partnership with Growthpoint Properties, attended as a demonstration partner rather than a competing team. Their exhibit illustrated how Sesame Workshop’s educational materials are being used in everyday learning environments. Teachers from Victory Kids explained how Play Boxes — interactive learning toolkits created by Sesame Workshop International — help children build creativity and problem-solving skills through structured play.
The partnership between Victory Kids and Growthpoint reflects how private-sector involvement can advance education and support quality early learning in South Africa. Their collaboration highlights the long-term impact that comes when businesses, educators and NGOs work together toward a shared vision of nurturing young minds.
Throughout the day, excitement and cheers filled the indoor arena. Colleagues encouraged teammates from the sidelines, families clapped for every goal, and laughter flowed between matches. Food stalls, upbeat music and friendly conversation turned the tournament into a true community celebration — one where learning, teamwork and joy intersected seamlessly.
Reflecting on the event’s success, Corne Botha, Head of Marketing at Sesame Workshop South Africa, praised the energy and unity shown by participants and organisers alike.
“What made today truly special was the sense of connection,” said Botha. “You could see professionals, parents and children all enjoying themselves together, united by one idea — that learning through play builds stronger individuals and stronger communities. The teamwork, the laughter, the energy on the courts and fields — that’s what Sesame Workshop is all about.”
As the final matches concluded and the winning teams received their medals, applause and smiles filled the venue. Beyond the trophies and prizes, it was the shared joy of participation that lingered. The 2025 Sesame Sports Challenge reminded everyone present that sport and play are powerful tools for learning, growth and inclusion.
For 25 years, Sesame Workshop South Africa has inspired children to learn through laughter, curiosity and creativity. From classrooms to television screens — and now to sports arenas filled with cheering families — the organisation’s impact continues to ripple through generations.
The Sesame Sports Challenge stood as a vibrant reflection of that legacy: a day where play became learning, collaboration became celebration, and every cheer echoed the same timeless message — that when children are given the freedom to play, they discover the power to imagine a brighter future.
