Westgate Shopping Centre, is marking 40 years of community engagement, economic contribution, and reinvention through its anniversary campaign, Our Journey Together. The milestone reflects the evolution of a shopping hub that has grown alongside the West Rand community since opening its doors in 1985.
Over four decades, Westgate has developed from one of the city’s first super-regional malls into a modern, multi-purpose retail destination that continues to adapt to changing consumer habits and urban demands. The centre’s investments in accessibility, transport integration, security infrastructure, water-saving systems, and renewable energy highlight a sustained commitment to both environmental and economic sustainability.
General Manager Wiley Quinn said the anniversary marks more than longevity — it represents the mall’s deep connection to its community. “This milestone reflects the vote of confidence by our customers and the vibrant community we serve,” Quinn said. “We remain committed to providing a safe, clean, and family-friendly retail experience while continuing to invest in our sustainable future.”
Beyond the retail upgrades, including a refurbished Checkers Hyper, new H&M store, and revitalised food court, the centre’s 40th campaign places strong emphasis on social impact. The Legacy of Learning Schools Art Competition, launched in partnership with local schools, will see ten institutions from the Johannesburg West Education District showcase learners’ artistic interpretations of Westgate’s role in their community.
Roodebeeck Primary School principal, Mpho Hlalele, described the initiative as more than an art showcase. “This gives learners a platform to express themselves creatively while contributing to a legacy we’re all proud of. It’s an opportunity that builds both personal and academic growth,” he said.
Westgate’s broader socio-economic footprint extends beyond commerce, with projects like the Annual Literacy Campaign and local school partnerships aimed at advancing youth development. The new art competition builds on that legacy, reinforcing the mall’s role as a community hub that invests in education and culture.
The Our Journey Together celebrations include a range of community-focused activations — from creative workshops and social media storytelling to a digital “Unlock 40 & Win” campaign designed to reward loyal customers. The interactive Memory Booth invites visitors to revisit the mall’s history while participating in prize giveaways, connecting nostalgia with innovation.
For the management team, the anniversary is not only a celebration of history but also a blueprint for the future. The campaign’s theme, What Westgate Means to Me – Today and Tomorrow, underscores the centre’s intention to remain relevant in a rapidly changing retail and social landscape.
As one of the West Rand’s economic anchors, Westgate continues to serve as both a shopping destination and a driver of local development — proof that, even after 40 years, its journey with the community is far from over.
