Absa, AWS Partner to Speed Up Cloud Migration in South Africa

Absa Group is stepping up its digital journey with Amazon Web Services (AWS) in a partnership that promises to transform not only banking but also lives across the continent. While the collaboration will fast-track the bank’s move to the cloud, its true power lies in how it will unlock opportunities for ordinary people through skills development, job creation, and inclusive growth.

For Absa, digital transformation is not just about technology – it’s about using innovation to create a better, more accessible banking experience while ensuring communities benefit too. By making AWS its preferred cloud provider, Absa is positioning itself to deliver faster, safer, and more personalised financial services. But importantly, the partnership also has a people-first approach, with a strong focus on education and empowerment.

One of the most exciting aspects of the collaboration is its commitment to developing digital skills among women. Absa and AWS are working with the Women in Tech initiative for the third consecutive year, training 150 unemployed women from South Africa, Kenya, Botswana, Uganda, and Ghana. Each participant will receive free AWS Cloud training and a sponsored certification exam, creating real pathways into the digital economy.

“This partnership is about more than modernising systems – it’s about opening doors for young women and communities who deserve to be part of Africa’s digital future,” says Johnson Idesoh, Absa’s Group Chief Information and Technology Officer.

The collaboration also marks an important milestone for Africa’s growing tech ecosystem. By choosing a cloud provider with data centres on the continent, Absa and AWS are investing in local infrastructure, local jobs, and local innovation. The partnership is expected to drive inclusive digital economies where SMEs, entrepreneurs, and everyday citizens can benefit from smarter technology and accessible financial solutions.

Tanuja Randery, AWS Vice President for EMEA, explains: “When technology meets empowerment, the impact multiplies. We are proud to work alongside Absa to not only accelerate digital adoption but also to ensure communities gain the skills they need to thrive.”

With its customer-first approach and commitment to inclusive growth, Absa is showing how big business can help build a digital Africa where no one is left behind. The partnership with AWS is more than a corporate deal – it’s a step towards a future where innovation fuels opportunity, and where women, youth, and communities share in the benefits of the digital revolution.
