The City of Cape Town’s Human Settlements Directorate handed over eight more homes to the beneficiaries of the Mau Mau project in Gugulethu. This handover forms part of the City’s commitment to deliver dignified housing opportunities to qualifying beneficiaries across the metro.
The City’s Gugulethu Infill housing project, which will deliver 1 004 housing opportunities in total, includes 570 homes in Gugulethu and 434 in Mau Mau, Nyanga. The City’s full takeover of the Gugulethu Infill housing project has accelerated delivery, ensuring that more residents move into their homes at a faster pace.
‘The progress of the Gugulethu infill housing project and specifically the Mau Mau portion of the project, is proof of what is possible when we stay determined to deliver to communities and when communities and all stakeholders work with us to make this possible. This handover represents our teamwork and hard work, and we look forward to handing over more homes in the coming months.
‘Every single City housing opportunity is about dignity, security and restoring hope for families who have been patiently waiting for their opportunity. Our Human Settlements teams and partners are determined, and we are continuing to roll out housing opportunities across the city, with several projects at various stages of development.
‘The City thanks all staff, partners and especially the community for working with us to make this day possible,’ said the Mayoral Committee Member for Human Settlements, Councillor Carl Pophaim.
Beneficiaries of City housing projects are selected in accordance with the City’s Housing Allocation Policy and Housing Needs Register to ensure housing opportunities are made available in a fair and transparent manner that prevents queue jumping and to those who qualify for housing as per the South African legislation.
