The City of Cape Town’s Recreation and Parks Department celebrated its long-serving staff earlier this week. 152 staff members were honoured for years of service ranging between 20 and 45 years.
Collectively, the long service awards honoured staff who have put in a total of 6 934 years of service.
These staff members are mostly workers who have contributed their entire service to ensure excellent service delivery to Cape Town’s residents.
‘We are immensely proud of their achievements and are thankful for their unwavering commitment and loyalty to the department. These long-serving staff members are the backbone of our organisation and we thank them for their hard work.
‘They are true role models for our staff and serve as an inspiration to us all and a reminder of the importance of hard work and dedication. We hope to follow in their footsteps and continue to make a positive impact on our community. We are truly grateful for their contribution’, said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, Councillor Patricia Van Der Ross.
The longest-serving employee, George Petersen from Mitchells Plain, celebrated 45 years of service.
In 1978 he began his employment with the then Parks and Forests Department and has remained a valued and integral part of the department, contributing to its success for over 40 years.
He has worked at the Hill Star and Athlone Depots for more than 20 years, where he is currently a Team Leader.
His experience includes supervising teams on the ground and doing a variety of horticulture activities like mowing, tree landscaping and maintenance, specialised truck driving and park maintenance. He has a gentle demeanour yet is a hardworking, trustworthy and reliable worker who always goes the extra mile.
