VWSA provides over 34 000 meals to communities in need

In a bid to alleviate the hardships felt by community members in Nelson Mandela Bay, Volkswagen Group South Africa (VWSA) has partnered with Rise Against Hunger to provide over 34 000 meals for needy citizens.

The company handed over 160 boxes of food packs to 10 beneficiaries in Kariega and Gqeberha, ranging from soup kitchens to community centres and individual volunteers. These beneficiaries will then distribute the food packs within their communities.

The beneficiaries include:

Lukhanyiso Child and Youth Centre (KwaNobuhle)

Sikhulile Community Development (KwaNobuhle)

Ithembalethu Community Development (KwaNobuhle)

Sinako-We Can (KwaNobuhle)

ROAC Mothers Union (Rosedale)

Phila Soup Kitchen (KwaNobuhle)

Salem Moravian Welfare Committee (Gqeberha)

Thenjiwe Njobe-Jonas (community volunteer, New Brighton)

Sisters Yvonne and Janine Soup Kitchen (Tiryville)

Roselane Congregation (Rosedale)

The 160 boxes of food contain a total of 5 760 meal packs, each of which is sufficient to feed six adults one meal a day for more than a month. This equates to 34 560 meals provided for community members in need.

This support and partnership with Rise Against Hunger comes at a critical time, with an Ipsos study estimating that over 40% of South Africans struggle with hunger and food security.

“The VW Community Trust has been working to uplift communities in need for over 30 years, and due to Covid-19 our communities are more in need than ever,” said Nonkqubela Maliza, Director of Corporate and Government Affairs at VWSA. “We are proud to partner with Rise Against Hunger to assist in the communities where VWSA operates, and we salute the beneficiaries who will distribute these food parcels, for their tireless efforts to make a difference every day.”
