Upcycled “Bokamoso” Bags For Sandton Shoppers

In the spirit of commitment to sustainability, and an enhancement of the prestigious shopping experience that Nelson Mandela Square is known for, shoppers now have access to an exquisite collection of limited edition, reusable shopper bags. Aptly named “Bokamoso” meaning “future” in Sesotho, the bags tell a powerful story of sustainability. They were made from upcycled PVC banners that once decorated the iconic centre’s arches.

Slick and stylish, the Bokamoso bags are the result of a collaboration between Nelson Mandela Square and the non-profit Khanyisa Mawethu Foundation, with the intention of unlocking the potential of creativity and design to change lives, while creating something beautiful. As the material’s original purpose came to an end, a new (re)purpose was created. Because the bags are hand sewn using the available materials, each bag is unique, and a true must-have for every shopper’s collection.

There are only a few hundred Bokamoso bags available exclusively by purchasing a gift voucher at one of our information kiosks in centre throughout the month of September 2021, or while stocks last.

“While we continually look for ways to enhance our upmarket shopping experience, it is essential to combine a commitment to sustainability and community upliftment to that process” said Asset Management Executive Brian Unsted. “These magnificent bags combine all of these elements, and carry the promise of a more sustainable future,” he added.

Liberty Two Degrees (L2D), co-owner of Nelson Mandela Square, has committed to eliminating plastic shopping bags across its portfolio of shopping centres, ensuring that Nelson Mandela Square, among other centres in the portfolio, plays its part in addressing the pressing environmental issue of plastic pollution. This also ensures that the centre contributes positively towards the sustainability of the natural environment, while taking shoppers and tenants along this journey.

In addition to this, L2D’s commitment through its membership in the SA Plastics Pact, extends towards its contribution in unlocking barriers to a circular economy for plastic, with improved economic, environmental and societal outcomes overall. The collective initiative brings together key stakeholders from the local plastics value chain, to tackle plastic waste and pollution at its source.

Nelson Mandela Square is COVID-19 compliant and has stringent safety and hygiene measures in place. For more information on Nelson Mandela Square, kindly contact Nelson Mandela Square’s Marketing Manager, Mody Khabele – Mody.Khabele@epsgroup.co.za or visit www.nelsonmandelasquare.co.za.
