50 prints for 50 bursaries

The Lockdown Collection (TLC) continues to raise funds for artists through the sales of a new William Kentridge limited edition print. Renowned South African artist, William Kentridge has generously donated this artwork – ‘OH TO BELIEVE IN ANOTHER WORLD’ – to The Lockdown Collection (TLC) to create an edition of 50 prints to raise funds for 50 art-student bursaries. The works will be hand-signed by the artist and available for pre-order and purchase via Artist Proof Studio – the co-founding partner of The Lockdown Collection.

The work by Kentridge provides us all with a challenge to reach towards our dreams for a better world as we navigate the harsh realities of the impact of Covid19 as well as many other social, economic and environmental challenges. The purchase of a signed print, for R12 000, pays for a bursary for an art student. This is how art creates agency – when an artwork about dreaming, makes dreams come true.

The arts and culture sector is not only of critical economic development opportunity, it has helped the world cope with lockdowns through art, music, literature and film. Yet questionable management of funds by the local government for the creative sector in South Africa demonstrated injustice and disrespect. Investigations into an original allocation of R300m for the Arts and culture sector from the President’s Employment Stimulus Programme is still ongoing. That’s why this TLC initiative is especially significant, as many art students in South Africa have not received funding support over the past months.

The arts provide possibilities for a renewed and sustainable future and need to be supported. TLC, a champion for the arts, has worked tirelessly to raise money for vulnerable artists since March 2020. OH TO BELIEVE IN ANOTHER WORLD is a call to our imaginings. It could be our collective dream for a post-covid recovery or to re-envision our futures

The initiative is calling on all collectors, communities and caring individuals and organisations to start or add to their artworks with a most significant and memorable piece that captures so simply and beautiful the sentiments of this time; to respond to this call and support art education.

By supporting this TLC initiative, you not only acquire an extraordinary limited edition print signed by one of the world’s greatest artistic genius’; but you provide the possibility for continued education and opportunity for the next generation of artists.
