Kiphart Family Foundation awards $25 million for global health center

The University of Chicago has announced a $25 million gift from the Kiphart Family Foundation in support of global health research and initiatives.

The gift will establish the Susan and Richard Kiphart Center for Global Health and Social Development, which will be housed in the Crown Family School of Social Work, Policy, and Practices and administered in partnership with the university’s Biological Sciences Division. With a focus on addressing the root causes of health inequities in West Africa and low- and middle-income communities around the world, the center will support research, education, and interdisciplinary efforts aimed at alleviating disease, improving infrastructure, and promoting community health and well-being.

Susan Kiphart and her husband, who died in 2016, were instrumental in establishing the university’s Center for Global Health, whose activities will be folded into those of the Kiphart Center.

“Over the last decade, through the continued support from Susan and Dick Kiphart, the university has led high-impact, global health efforts in more than a dozen countries, working on the ground with local colleagues and community partners,” said Olufunmilayo Olopade, the Walter L. Palmer Distinguished Service Professor of Medicine and Human Genetics, who, with her husband, Christopher Sola Olopade, professor of medicine and dean for academic affairs in the Biological Sciences Division, has regularly collaborated with the Kipharts. “This new commitment allows us to expand these collaborative efforts, accelerate our progress in reducing health inequities, and deepen partnerships with the Crown Family School.”
