Peace and security funders awarded $377 million in 2018, study finds

Global philanthropic support for efforts to prevent, mitigate, and resolve conflicts totaled $376.8 million in 2018, a report from the Peace and Security Funders Group and Candid finds.

According to the Peace and Security Funding Index (2 pages, PDF), three hundred and thirty-five foundations awarded more than twenty-five hundred grants in 2018 in support of peace and security efforts, accounting for just 0.9 percent of the $33 billion given by foundations in Candid’s research set of a thousand of the largest U.S. foundations.

The index, which analyzes grants in twenty-four issue areas across three categories — preventing and mitigating conflict, resolving conflict and building peace, and supporting stable, resilient societies — found that the largest share of grant dollars in 2018 was awarded for work broadly focused on supporting stable, resilient societies ($75.9 million), resolving conflict and building peace ($53.5 million), nuclear issues ($52 million), and conflict and atrocities prevention ($34.9 million). While peace and security funders support a wide range of strategies, policy work is the most frequently employed strategic approach, representing 34 percent of all funding. By comparison, policy, advocacy, and systems reform represented just 10 percent of overall funding from the Candid data set.

The Carnegie Corporation of New York topped the list of peace and security funders, awarding a hundred and three grants totaling $47.3 million, followed by the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation (76 grants, $40.7 million), the Foundation to Promote Open Society, part of the Open Society Foundations (139 grants, $38.6 million), the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation (41 grants, $17.7 million), and the Ford Foundation (61 grants, $16.7 million). The top five funders are all members of the Peace and Security Funders Group.
