Community to receive drought relief fund

Namibia Red Cross Society (NRCS) has committed N$4 million to assist the Kunene residents who were heavily affected by drought since 2019. Small scale farmers in the area have been further been affected by climate change which has become the greatest challenge in the world affecting the livelihoods of many communities.

In a speech read by Marius Sheya on behalf of Emilia Alweendo the governor of Kunene, Marius confirmed the Drought Relief Intervention programme at Khorixas. Part of the speech said that Kunene was still recovering from the 2019 drought that led to appeals for support and various interventions were provided.

Part of the donated titems included cash, food, essential goods and the government drought relief fund. NRCS will continue to complement government’s efforts in providing humanitarian assistance to communities affected by various disasters such as drought.

While giving a statement, Sheya said: “1 172 households had been identified to benefit from this intervention. Of these households 60% are female headed while 40% are headed by men. Furthermore, about 70% of the identified households are households with four or more people.”

“The increase in temperatures and unpredictable rainfall patterns has had a negative impact on water resources, affecting socio-economic activities of the people. However, beneficiaries have received N$1 500 for October and November, they will receive N$750 over the next two months,” said Sheya.
