Pearson Institute of Higher Education graduate, Xia Coetzer has always had a passion for psychology and working towards empowering people by improving their mental health. Xia took the first step towards pursuing her dream career by contacting a professor at the educational institute’s Psychology Department. “The professor told me that if I was serious about a career in psychology then PIHE is the best institution to study at” Xia says, and recently graduated with her Bachelor of Arts: Psychology certificate in 2017.

These include time management, planning, communication skills and self-care, which is fundamental in maintaining a balance in life,” says Xia.
As a registered counsellor employed at ICAS Southern Africa, Xia looks back on her student life and says students were treated as individuals rather than a student number. Lecturers didn’t just hand out textbooks, but instead offered practical assignments, field trips and brought in guest speakers. Abnormal Psychology, Psychopathology, Neuro Psychology, Personality Theories, Individual Psychology and Ethics were among some of Xia’s favourite subjects while studying at PIHE.
Xia has ambitions of owning her own private practice where she will be able to work with a variety of people and cultures. She wants to make a difference in people’s lives and equip them with the necessary tools to be independent and have the courage to face life’s inevitable challenges.
