Each year on 13 November, conscious citizens across the globe heed the call to make the world a better place by committing good deeds and pledging acts of kindness. This year, in celebration of World Kindness Day, SA Harvest and caring communities across Joburg, Cape Town and Durban are embarking on a
#FestiveKindness campaign, giving those who have a little more than others the opportunity to practice kindness over the festive season.
Says Alan Browde, CEO of SA Harvest, a food rescue organisation that has delivered the equivalent of 3 million meals to over 40 beneficiary organisations since the start of lockdown, “In a year that’s been
characterised by a massive increase in hunger in South Africa, the act of giving during the festive season is more significant than ever.”
For 30 days from 13 November to 13 December, SA Harvest, in collaboration with community groups and schools, will be collecting toys and Christmas treats for vulnerable children, along with non-perishable food items and sanitary pads.
Some of the communities and Community Action Network (CAN) groups that will be participating in the #FestiveKindness collection include Constantia, Fresnaye and Oranjezicht in Cape Town; Killarney, Waterfall, Fourways,Linksfield, Glenhazel, Morningside and Lonehill in Joburg; and Ballito and Durban North in Durban. The recipients of the donations from the #FestiveKindness campaign are organisations in each city that provide support to orphaned children and child-headed households.
“The sky’s the limit when it comes to kindness, and every community can get involved. We are calling on every school or community with a WhatsApp group and a desire to practice kindness to co-ordinate a #FestiveKindness collection in your area. Our cheerful SA Harvest trucks will collect donations from community groups of new and nearly new toys, Christmas treats, non-perishable food and sanitary pads, and they’ll be packaged into bright yellow bags to bring joy and smiles to the faces of children this
Christmas.”
