Meditation best medicine for Covid-19 stress

Losing a job can leave one hysterical with possibilities of shortness of breath caused by too much thinking and stress. The relaxation response from meditation can help lower blood pressure, improve the heart rate, breathing, and brain wave functionality.

Researchers have found that over 3 million South Africans lost their jobs during the on -going COVID -19, while of those who managed to keep their jobs, 1.5million did not have an income.

Meditation has had a positive impact on the lives of many, proving that there is indeed way more to the practice than simply sitting in calming silence and focusing on the breath.

There are different kinds of meditation and they all bear several benefits for one’s physical, mental and spiritual health during this global crises.

Benefits of meditating include:

Stress reduction

The challenges and unanticipated changes which we experience in life can leave us feeling very stressed. As such, it comes as no surprise that stress reduction is the number one reason many people decide to start meditating. In this instance, meditation can provide clarity of mind and help you focus your attention, eliminating any jumbled thoughts that may be causing you stress. Through meditation, you can reach a deep state of relaxation which leaves you feeling tranquil and stress-free.

Enhanced focus and concentration

According to a 2017 study conducted by Harvard Medical School, mindful meditation has a positive effect on the processing of new information. As part of the study, researchers examined the brains of 17 participants before and after an eight-week meditation programme.

Post-meditation, the brain scans of all the participants showed an improvement in the parts of the brain responsible for memory, learning and the regulation of emotion. In this age of endless distractions, meditation can refocus your mind and better your cognition.

Fights insomnia

No sleeping tablets? No problem! Meditation is a cheap and easy way to fight insomnia. When you meditate, you relax the mind and body through enhancing inner peace. This also enables you to direct or control racing thoughts which often lead to a lack of sleep.
Meditation releases tension and places, you in a peaceful state of mind in which you are more likely to fall asleep. A few minutes of meditation before bedtime can grant you overall calmness and help you sleep better.

Helps fight addiction

Meditation has been proven to be an effective way to naturally overcome any addiction. By meditating, you activate your prefrontal cortex and stimulate your brain to be happy. It provides a “natural high” and eliminates the need for any addictive feel-good substance such as alcohol or drugs.

Most addictions also stem from stress. Meditation is an effective way of dealing with stress, therefore dealing with a deeply rooted reason for addiction.

Increased awareness

Meditation increases your ability to perceive the self in a healthy, present and centred way. Mindful self-awareness can help you enter into a healthy state of self-perception. Once you become more aware, you are better able to focus and appreciate yourself and your surroundings.
