EU donates $55m in virus combat to Nigeria.

The European Union has made a sound donation of $55m to boost Nigeria in the fight against the coronavirus. This was confirmed true in a meeting between President Muhammadu Buhari and EU delegation.

The President expressed his sincere condolences to families that had lost their lives due to the coronavirus on twitter. He further urged that this was not a personal pandemic thus there was need for them to help where ever possible to fight the pandemic.

The EU Ambassador after seeing the tweet congratulated President Buhari for a very powerful and touching speech and further commented that, “Indeed the current situation is no joke and we wish to commend you for taking bold and necessary measures.”

In remarks, Ambassador Karlsen spoke of the donation. He said it came through from the UN COVID-19 basket fund. He also stressed out that the largest single contribution that EU had thus provided outside Europe was the support to Nigeria in response of 348 confirmed COVID-19 cases with 10 deaths in the country.

The Ambassador also made clear that European Union was acting on mobilising other sources of funds taking to consideration that they had already paid 1.2 million Euros to UNICEF, and goods purchased through that funding were expected in the country soon.

In his gratitude note to the EU delegation, President Buhari said the donation would go a long way in supporting Nigeria’s efforts at controlling & containing the virus to prevent community spread, as well as revitalise the national health care systems.
