Eight Johannesburg schools have been gifted with libraries and resource centres thanks to an ongoing
initiative addressing the shortage of books in primary schools. Imperial and Motus Community Trust in
partnership with Hyundai Automative, handed over their first library to Southview High School in
Lenasia in 2013.
Heerengracht Primary in Eldorado Park, Motheo Foundation Primary in Lawley, Freedom Primary in
Devland, as well as Mid-Ennerdale Primary and Phehello Primary in Sebokeng.
The initiative recently presented a library and a resource centre at Lindisa Primary in Evaton,
Johannesburg which was accepted by Principal Lawrence Ngcobo on behalf of the school. They spent
R1.5 million to refurbish a classroom at Lindisa by converting it to a library with tables, chairs,
bookshelves, a big-screen whiteboard and were supplied with two librarians who would assist the
learners. The shelves were filled with about 4,500 new books, ranging from encyclopedias to fiction to
be accessed by 1200 pupils.
