2019 Miss Universe Zozibini Tunzi launches GBV Campaign

Zozibini  Tunzi was born and bred in Tsolo, Sidwadweni in the Eastern Cape and comes from a background where she was surrounded by educators. Her mother is a school principal and her father work at the Department of Higher Education and Training in Pretoria. Academically, she holds a National Diploma in Public Relations Management from the Cape Peninsula University of Technology and is continuing with her studies at the institution.

She entered the Miss South Africa competition twice and was a semi-finalist in 2017 and won the Miss SA title in 2019 on Women’s Day in South Africa. On Sunday the 8th of December she was crowned as Miss Universe at the Tyler Perry Studios in Atlanta, Georgia, USA. Tunzi chose to celebrate her blackness by embracing her natural hair during the pageant. “Beauty pageants in 2019 are more than just outer beauty, they are about what an individual can offer to the world said Tunzi.

The newly crowned model who is also a talented singer who is using her platform to change the narrative about gender-based violence. She recently announced her Gender-Based Violence campaign called #HeForShe on her social media pages. Tunzi wrote on her Twitter account: “Remember that time on the 9th of August when I said I would call on all men to stand with women in the fight against Gender-Based Violence? That day has come.”

She also shared that she is excited to launch her campaign together with UN Women SA. Zozibini further added that she is challenging the nation to stand with women. Today marks the end of 16 Days of Activism against Gender-based violence.
