Anti-Corruption Day picket to help build unity around accountability

The Ahmed Kathrada Foundation will be hosting a picket on International Anti-Corruption Day.

Date: Monday, 9th December 2019
Time: 7.30am to 8.30am
Venue: Outside the ZK Matthews Hall, Unisa, Pretoria
The picket will take place outside a gathering entitled  “United against Corruption: Building a culture of accountability for sustainable development”. It is being hosted by the Public Service Commission, UNISA and the UN. Speakers include, amongst others, the NPA’s Shamila Batohi, and the Hawks’ Lieutenant General Godfrey Lebeya.
The Minister of Public Service and Administration, Senzo Mchunu, has agreed to receive a memorandum from the demonstrator.

The picket will be calling on the conference to:
1) Acknowledge some of the work done by the criminal justice system in 2019, indicating that there is forward movement in tackling state capture and corruption.
2) Highlight that there is growing public impatience with the pace at which work is being done to defeat state capture and bring those implicated in it to account. In addition, there is an urgency to finalise cases and begin the prosecution process.

3) Ensure that government begins looking at a coherent and comprehensive response to not only corruption in general, but state capture, specifically, in its entirety. This plan should include all role players; both within state institutions and those in civil society; business and labour in rallying against state capture.

4) Call on government to conclude its extradition treaties and agreements with countries including the UAE and India to bring the Guptas and their associates implicated in state capture back to South Africa to be held accountable here.

Organisations are urged to bring along your own posters, attend the picket and consider adding your name to a memorandum, which will be circulated later today.

Please RSVP your attendance by emailing zaakirah@kathradafoundation.org or WhatsApp 076 243 1185
