Coding & Robotics are on the cards for primary schools in 2020

From 2020, the Department of Basic Education will include coding and robotics in the curriculum of grade R to grade three learners across the country. The curriculum for pupils in the senior phase of primary school is headed toward its final stages.

At the South African Democratic Teacherā€™s Unionā€™s 9th national congress, the Minister of Basic Education, Angie Motshekga said, ā€œOur teachers are being trained in computer skills including new teaching areas such as robotics and coding, amongst othersā€. This was said with reference to the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

Motshekga was proud to add that the number of learners starting school late has dropped significantly. She said, ā€œStatistics show that the percentage of seven-year-old surveyed in the general household survey who have already completed grade one has increased from about 35% in 2002 to about 64% in 2017.
