Huawei partners with Imbumba Foundation for Trek4Mandela Women’s Day Summit

Huawei has announced its partnership with the Imbumba Foundation for the Trek4Mandela Women’s Day climb, which is being led by former Public Protector of South Africa, Professor Thuli Madonsela.

Now entering its 8th year, The Trek4Mandela is an annual expedition to summit Africa’s highest peak, Mount Kilimanjaro, in commemoration of Mandela Day. The event brings together inspired individuals from different corporate and public backgrounds to assist in raising funds and creating awareness for Caring4Girls, a sanitary towels distribution programme that aims to help keep adolescent girls in school during their monthly cycles. For the first time, 2019 will see two groups of Trek4Mandela climbers get to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro – one who will summit on Mandela Day on 18 July and the other who will summit on Women’s Day on 9 August.

“Huawei has partnered with the Imbumba Foundation because of their commitment toward enriching the lives of those most vulnerable. Education is a vital element of ensuring a positive future for South Africa, and young girls should not have to miss a day of school due to not having access to sanitary towels.  In the spirit of Mandela Day, Huawei wants to create a more meaningful long-term impact on the lives of the less fortunate, and joins the Imbumba Foundation in their aim of raising enough funds to ensure that 1 million girls have access to sanitary towels, ” says Likhun Zhao, General Manager of Huawei South Africa.

To officially launch the partnership between Huawei and Trek4Mandela, Huawei will be visiting the Lehwelereng Secondary School in Hammanskraal on 11 July 2019. The agenda for the day will include a speaking session and puberty workshop for both girls and boys, and female learners will be provided with a year’s supply of much-needed sanitary pads. The visit will be concluded by a mentoring course, where Huawei will be discussing technology and marketing with the learners.

To assist the Trek4Mandela climbers in tracking their progress on their Women’s Day summit of Kilimanjaro, Huawei will be sponsoring a Huawei P30 as well as the Huawei Watch GT to these climbers:

  • Prof. Thuli Madonsela: former Public Protector of South Africa and Advocate
  • Gerrie Elsdon: Presenter and Speaker
  • Sello Hatang: CEO of the Mandela Foundation
  • Richard Mabaso: CEO of the Imbumba Foundation
  • Pearl Shongwe: TV and Sports Presenter.

“Huawei is very excited to be involved in Trek4Mandela, and helping young girls on their path to a thriving future. We wish the climbers well on their journey and encourage all South Africans to donate to this worthy cause,” concludes Zhao.
