Momentum hosts #SheOwnsHerSuccess event in honour of all women

Momentum hosted the #SheOwnsHerSuccess event in honour of women on Thursday the 29th of August 2019.  The event was the highlight of the #NoApologyForMySuccess campaign launched at the beginning of the month.

The event took place at Katy’s Palace Bar in Sandton. Elana Afrika-Brendenkamp created an electric atmosphere as the Master of Ceremonies before Nontokozo Madonsela, Group Chief Officer at Momentum, welcomed and thanked those in attendance for supporting the campaign. Madonsela encouraged all women to give adequate voice to their accomplishments, and for women to focus more on what they’re doing right, instead of focusing on what they could have done better. She called it “the 80/20 principal.”

Kevin Dike from Missing Link presented a workshop on how to use PowerPoint presentations in an impactful manner, as well as how to use language and one’s body to make others engage while you’re presenting. Dike presented over 150 slides of information so creatively that members of the audience thought he had only presented around 45 slides.

Activist Farah Fortune was the keynote speaker of the event. In her opening remarks, she said, “ Why are we so sorry for everything? Men aren’t sorry for anything!” Fortune spoke about her challenging journey to success, and reminded guests to always know their “Why” and to remember it, especially when facing challenges.  She engaged with the guests and encouraged everyone to network and build one another up. She reminded guests that women achieve every day and that the victories that seem “insignificant” are sometimes of great importance. In closing, she quoted Kathy Black who said, “Successful women have an aura that says, ‘I belong in this seat.’”

Margriet du Preez was the final presenter of the day. She presented on sharing one’s personal brand. Du Preez told guests that there is a big difference between a person’s personal brand, a person self-promoting. She shared tips on how to present social media pages, as well as the impact of being vulnerable,  has with one’s followers.

The #NoApologyForMySuccess campaign sought to inspire women to speak confidently about their accomplishments in both their professional and personal lives. Momentum flipped the “M” of Momentum to become a “W” to illustrate how serious they are about women. The “M” of their headquarters was also flipped around the same time.
