Teams from Gugulethu, Nyanga, Hout Bay, Heideveld, Langa and Mbwekeni in Paarl will battle it out on the courts at the German International School on 15 and 16 June 2024. Invitations for participation have also been extended to nine teams from Botswana, Johannesburg and KwaZulu-Natal.
The fourth edition of the Under-19 tournament will host more than 800 girls and boys over the two days.
First held in 2018, the Youth Day Classic Basketball Tournament was established by African Grassroot Hoops to provide a competition platform for basketball youth in Cape Town who could go up against teams from the rest of the country.
‘African Grassroot Hoops is an organisation that not only promotes basketball in the greater Cape Town areas, but also uses the sport as a platform for nurturing young talent into future leaders. This tournament is about more than just basketball and also provides mentorship with motivational speakers and basketball experts. The City of Cape Town is proud to be associated with an initiative aimed at developing young people for the future. We would like to urge residents to show up in their numbers to create a vibrant atmosphere as the next generation of hoopers display their talent and athleticism,’ said Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith.
In addition to basketball action, the tournament also held workshops and coaching clinics for young basketball players in the lead up to the main event.
Games on both days will start at 09:00 and end at 18:00.
Tickets for spectators start at R50 and they are available through Quicket.
