Active Bodies Quadrathlon to raise funds for children with facial anomalies

Smile Foundation, a non-profit organisation that supports children living with facial anomalies such as cleft lip, cleft palate, craniofacial abnormalities and burn wounds is trying to raise much needed funds as a result of elective surgeries being put on hold during Lockdown. Only urgent oncology and trauma cases have received surgery during lockdown, resulting in a significant backlog of elective surgeries, including plastic and reconstructive surgery for children in desperate need.

Active Bodies Sports Development is an organisation based in Cape Town providing opportunities in sports and cycling to underprivileged youth from mostly the Cape Flats. Each year they take about 60-80 keen and inspired young cyclists to the Cape Town Cycle Tour. They are also well known in the cycling fraternity for being the Coronation Double Century Treble Champions. With their passion and love for children, using the current social distancing requirements, they will be hosting fundraising events for all, young & old, all fitness levels and to give a unique opportunity for the entire community to walk/hike, run, cycle and swim towards this great cause.

These 4 activities have been grouped under the ACTIVE BODIES QUADRATHLON where each of these activities can be completed separately from anywhere in the world or combined depending on the participant. The event can either be completed as an individual where participants can either just run, walk, cycle or swim under the MULTISPORTS category, or they can try the QUADRATHLON BASIC for (beginners), ADVANCED (average fitness) or PROFESSIONAL (active people) categories where participants can either only do 1,2,3 or all 4 activities. These activities can be performed at any time over the weekend and there will be live ZOOM SESSION where all participants can share and view what others are doing.

The ACTIVE BODIES QUADRATHLON includes virtual cycling (ROAD/ MTB/ BMX, Indoor trainer), running (urban/ trail/cross country/treadmill), walking/hiking (urban/ trail/cross country/treadmill), & swimming (open water/dam/river/swimming pool/bath) & can be completed by all members of a family young & old.

To register, all is required to go to the Smile Foundation web page on www.smilefoundation.co.za and click on the link or via the Active Bodies Sports Development Facebook page.

There are several fun prizes such as BEST DRESSED TEAM, BEST GEES TEAM, TIK TOK TEAM, QUADRATHLON TEAM, QUADRATHLON INDIVIDUAL and several others such as furthest distance covered by runners, walkers/hikers, cyclists & swimmers where a Garmin or Strava recording would be required. Since it is a virtual event, it can be completed from anywhere in the world, even in a shopping mall, & is intended to provide a platform of supporting charity using fun activities to improve fitness & promote a healthy lifestyle. This event also facilitates the act of giving back by making the winners in the various categories “SUPERHERO’s” where they will be granted an opportunity to give back.

The event is open to all ages and donations are only R10 for youth up the ages of 18 and R50 minimum per adult. The payment portal allows for foreign payments making it easy for participants in other countries to support the cause of raising funds for the Smile Foundation and for those who will not be able to participate, can just donate.
