Farai Taruvinga an MP in Zimbabwe’s Insiza North district has given out a total of $50 000 to the Highlanders soccer team to help the club pay their player’s salaries.
Taruvinga, who is also a legislator showed his concern after hearing that Highlanders had been left without a sponsor to fund them for their salaries. This was after their main sponsor NetOne terminated their deal to commit to social responsibilities towards fighting Covid-19.
The legislator also donated 175kg of beef having each player taking 5kg home. This was expected to sustain them during this uncertain era.
The Insiza MP challenged the business community and supporters to assist the club through this difficult period. He further expressed his love for the club saying it was impossible for the club to die hence it was everyone’s duty to help where ever possible.
“When I heard about the challenges faced by the club, I felt and still feel that we have a responsibility to save Highlanders. Bosso can’t die on us. I believe if we unite, we can help the club and players sail through the Covid-19 lockdown challenges,” said Taruvinga.
Taruvinga also engaged some of his friends to join in the fight and managed to donate a further $30 000 to the club in need. The chairman of the club, Kenneth Mhlophe went on to show his gratitude for the gesture.
“We’re grateful for Honourable Taruvinga’s gesture, which will go a long way towards easing pressure on the club as we continue with our search for funds. Highlanders is a community club and unlike teams that are bankrolled by companies, we have been hard hit by lack of activity because we get most of our revenue when we play games,” said Mhlophe.
