GBV is defined as a harmful act committed against an individual based on their gender. This scourge is rooted in gender inequality, abuse of power and powerful norms.
There are different forms of gender-based violence, among them physical, sexual, psychological and economic. Women are not the only victims of GBV. Men can also be victims.
GBV can happen to anyone, at any time. The effects are devastating, and, without intervention, can result in physical injury, poor mental health and even death.
Addressing GBV requires a comprehensive approach that includes legal action, education, support services and efforts to change societal norms that perpetuate gender inequality.
Impilo counsels many teenage mothers who have conceived as a result of gender-based violence. There is often no family support system, and families may often discourage the teenagers from opening a case of rape against the perpetrators.
Impilo’s VIKELA project is aimed at empowering both teenage girls experiencing unplanned pregnancies through GBV, and teenage boys who have been exposed to GBV. We are currently working closely with schools in areas that have been identified as having a high number of teenage pregnancies as a result of GBV.
You can make a difference in your everyday relationships, by treating everyone with respect and dignity.
