Introducing the DGMT Learning Lunch podcast series

The Learning Lunch podcast explores ideas, approaches and social innovations – creating opportunity for non-profit organisation (NPO/NGO) teams to discover what others are learning and space to reflect on what these insights might mean for their own strategy and programme implementation. Based on the premise of a brown bag lunch – an informal meeting or learning opportunity in the workplace, usually during the lunch hour – the podcast is hosted on the Learning Lunch website, as well as leading audio platforms like Spotify, Google Podcasts, Amazon Music and Pocket Casts just to name a few.

Each podcast includes a 30-minute main meal conversation and a 30-minute takeaway group reflection with your team that listened. There are three types of episodes: Deep Dives; Nourish & Flourish; and Best Bites:

  • The Deep Dive explores a specific topic in-depth and from different perspectives. These topics might often relate to current affairs or pertinent issues impacting the work of NGOs in South Africa.
  • Nourish & Flourish explores new ways of doing things as NGOs; it reflects on challenges specific to the sector; or provides inspiration – filling up our tanks – not just as staff, but as people.
  • Sharing the best bites profiles the work of a specific NGO around a topic, allowing a larger NGO audience to learn from their approach and to access the lessons they learned along the way. In doing so, we grow networks and develop best practices as a sector.

There are six podcasts available so far: We talk to Ruby Motaung, Director for Training and Resources in Early Education (TREE) and DGMT CEO Dr David Harrison about what can give us hope in civil society during challenging times. The Waves for Change programme share practical advice for all of us who might work with children or young people who are traumatised; and we learn more about Theory U, which is an approach to creating change based on a process of inner knowing and social innovation. We also deep dive into the potential of systems thinking for social innovation; and we draw inspiration and leadership lessons from the late Archbishop Desmond. Lastly, the Embrace Movement for Mothers share their approaches to telling exceptional storytelling.
