Three students from communities within Maquassi Hills and Matlosana Local Municipality have been awarded scholarships, as beneficiaries of Bokomoso Solar’s Scholarship Fund. All three are currently studying either engineering or education at tertiary institutions across the country, fully supported by this fund.
This Scholarship Fund, which exclusively targets learners from communities in these specific municipal areas, was launched in 2020, aimed at providing opportunities to matriculants wishing to study at tertiary institutions. Unlike most other programmes, students don’t need to contend against learners from other communities, making it a fantastic opportunity to fulfil a dream of studying after school.
The solar project’s Socio-Economic Development Programme prioritises youth and education, and views access to scholarships for community youth as a chance for young people to grasp a chance to fulfil their academic aspirations.
“It’s important to provide an opportunity to youth to develop themselves academically and to experience life away from home, which will give them experience to be able to navigate different environments, once they have completed their studies and move into the work area. Scholarships additionally give hope to students, especially from disadvantaged areas, as they learn that their background does not necessarily define them and that they can action their dreams,” said Tshepo Kgoloane, Community Operations Manager for Bokamoso Solar, who explained that the quality of applications, clearly demonstrated a thirst for education amongst community youth.
One such student, Boitumelo Pooe, from Maquassi Hill Local Municipality, is one of the three scholarship recipients. She is studying towards her B.ED Senior Phase, at the Free State University.
“The scholarship has enabled me to further my studies and helped my family not to worry about my future. Without it, I wouldn’t have been able to register. So qualifying was the best thing that could have happened to me,” said Boitumelo Pooe.
She added, saying, “My dream is to pass and graduate so that I can take care of my family, once I’m financially stable. Plus, I would also like to start an organisation which will enable me to give back to my community, by providing food and care for the less fortunate”.
Bokamoso Solar Scholarship Fund, is awarded to successful applicants who qualify to study an undergraduate degree or National Diploma at a recognized University or TVET College.
