IBSA joins Zambia in the fight against early child marriages

In 2016, the Ministry of Zambia began their investment on various projects to help reduce child marriages in Zambia.

One of the most recent projects to join the fight is the India, Brazil, South Africa (IBSA) pilot project which is currently aimed at reducing child marriages in Mpulungu and Chama Districts of Zambia.

According to studies, early child marriages have continued to deny girls their basic fundamental rights in the African continent and most children have dropped out of school because of the high rate of child marriage in the country.

Mr Silomba commented on the project recently at a review meeting for the IBSA pilot programme on reducing child marriages held in Lusaka and stated that ā€œThe IBSA project in tandem with our national strategic on ending child marriages which was developed in March 2016, and the National Plan of Action are aimed at accelerating national efforts to end child marriage by 2030,ā€ .

The pilot project will continue to use a curative and preventative approach in dealing with child marriages , in the hope of improving knowledge levels to facilitate positive changes.
