South Africa Tourism Numbers Surge

South Africa recorded nearly one million international tourist arrivals in April 2026, marking the country’s strongest monthly tourism growth since the start of the year.

According to Statistics South Africa’s latest International Tourism Report, the country welcomed 989 329 international arrivals in April 2026, representing a 19.5% increase compared to April 2025.

Tourism Minister Patricia de Lille said the latest figures demonstrate the resilience and growing global appeal of South Africa despite international travel challenges.

“This is our highest monthly year-on-year increase since the start of the year,” said Minister de Lille.

“This means that despite the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, which has led to global flight disruptions and ticket fare price increases, South Africa has not only defended its markets but has also grown in some regions.”

The tourism sector also recorded strong growth from several international markets.

Inbound arrivals from Singapore increased by 70.5% in April 2026, while arrivals from Brazil rose by 37.5%, reaching 5 953 visitors for the month.

The growth comes as airlines continue expanding direct connectivity between South Africa and international destinations.

Brazilian airline LATAM will launch three weekly direct flights between São Paulo and Cape Town in July 2026, bringing the launch date forward from September due to increased demand.

Spanish carrier Air Europa is also set to launch its inaugural direct flight between Madrid and Johannesburg on 24 June 2026.

Overall international arrivals between January and April 2026 increased by 14.1% year-on-year, reaching 3 899 358 visitors.

This represents an additional 482 935 international arrivals compared to the same period in 2025.

Monthly tourism growth figures for 2026 included:

  • January: 1 133 533 arrivals, up 12.4%
  • February: 864 534 arrivals, up 13.1%
  • March: 911 962 arrivals, up 12.5%
  • April: 989 329 arrivals, up 19.5%

The continued recovery and growth of the tourism sector is expected to support job creation, hospitality businesses, aviation growth and broader economic activity across South Africa.
