Upgraded Football Field Supports Limpopo Youth

MultiChoice and the Solly Malatsi Legacy Foundation hand over an upgraded sports field in Moduane Village, expanding youth access to safe, quality football facilities.

An upgraded community sports field in Moduane Village, Limpopo, has been officially handed over, providing hundreds of young people with access to a quality space to play, train and compete.

The project, delivered by the MultiChoice Group Sport and Development Trust in partnership with the Solly Malatsi Legacy Foundation, founded by Minister of Communications and Digital Technologies Solly Malatsi, has transformed a previously unused school ground into a fully functional football facility for the community.

The new field includes three changing rooms, a 200-seater embankment, access to water, electricity and sanitation, a perimeter wall for security and a natural grass pitch. It will serve as the home of the Solly Malatsi Legacy Foundation’s annual football tournament, which brings together more than 600 young players from Moduane and surrounding villages each year.

“Grassroots football is the theatre of dreams for many young players. Investment in proper football fields in rural communities will open doors for youngsters to pursue their dreams. Access to world-class facilities should become the norm,” said Minister Malatsi.

The handover event, hosted by Carol Tshabalala, formed part of the Moduane Village Soccer Festival, where local schools participated in a series of matches. Mantheding Primary played against Moraro Primary, while Morutwa Secondary faced Ramabu High School.

All participating teams received playing kits, while winning teams were awarded trophies, medals and training equipment to support their continued development and encourage participation in sport.

Matches were streamed live on SuperSport Schools, giving young players an opportunity to showcase their talent to a wider audience and experience competitive football on a larger platform.

Dr Keabetswe Modimoeng, MultiChoice Group Executive Vice President for Public Affairs Rest of Africa, highlighted the broader social benefits of grassroots sport.

“We know from research and lived experience that access to sport changes lives. When designed with equity at its core, grassroots sport delivers powerful benefits, including social connection, improved health outcomes, educational engagement and life skills,” he said.

The Moduane facility forms part of MultiChoice’s broader investment in youth sport through the MultiChoice Sport and Development Trust. To date, the company has invested more than R40 million in youth sports development initiatives, with a focus on upgrading facilities in under-resourced communities.

Over the past two years, similar multi-purpose sports facilities have been completed at Hoërskool Schweizer-Reneke in North West, Motswela Secondary School in Kroonstad and Credence Primary School in Bloemfontein. In Limpopo, schools such as Tshithuthuni Primary School in the Vhembe region and Hlabi Senior Secondary School in Mogaung village have also benefited, including the addition of a dedicated netball facility.

Through partnerships, the MultiChoice Sport and Development Trust has expanded its impact further. Over the past 36 months, 16 Centres of Sporting Excellence have been built across South Africa, reaching more than 200,000 children and strengthening school sport nationwide.

The Moduane handover reflects a continued commitment to expanding access to sport in communities where facilities are limited, ensuring more young people have opportunities to develop their talent and participate in structured sporting environments.
