Two former Springbok props, Marius Hurter and Eddie Andrews, will take on new endurance challenges at the 2026 Totalsports Two Oceans Marathon in Cape Town.
Hurter, a 1995 Rugby World Cup winner, will compete in the 56km Ultra Marathon on Saturday, 11 April, while Andrews returns on Sunday, 12 April, for his sixth Totalsports Two Oceans Half Marathon.
Once known for anchoring the national scrum with more than 130kg of front-row power, both athletes have transitioned into endurance sport, taking on new physical and mental challenges beyond rugby.
Hurter, affectionately known as “The Hurternator,” has transformed from a 132kg prop into a seasoned endurance athlete weighing around 103kg. Since retiring in 2006, he has completed multiple Ironman triathlons, nine Absa Cape Epic races, the Comrades Marathon and the Ultra-Trail Cape Town 100 miler.
This year’s race carries added significance as he runs alongside his eldest daughter, Annalien (20), in her first ultra marathon.
His journey reflects the demands of endurance sport, where mental resilience plays a central role alongside physical preparation.
Andrews, who played 23 Tests for South Africa between 2004 and 2007, began running in 2016 through Park Run and has steadily built his endurance credentials. The 2026 event marks his sixth appearance in the half marathon, bringing him closer to achieving Blue Number status, awarded to runners who complete ten races.
He has also encouraged fellow former rugby players to take part, highlighting the role of running communities in promoting fitness, discipline and social connection.
Event organisers say the participation of both athletes highlights the inclusive nature of the Totalsports Two Oceans Marathon, which attracts runners of all levels.
The event, widely regarded as one of the world’s most scenic marathons, features a 56km ultra marathon and a 21.1km half marathon, drawing thousands of participants to Cape Town each year.
Organisers add that stories like these continue to demonstrate how sport can evolve beyond competition, supporting long-term health, resilience and community engagement.
