Taking place on 10 August 2024 at the Basadi in Music Awards’ home, Joburg Theatre, these awards will celebrate the extraordinary careers of Linah Ngcobo, and Mercy Pakela.
These music icons have not only shaped South Africa’s soundscape, but left an indelible mark with their immense talent, unwavering dedication, and lasting impact. BIMA recognizes these women while they continue to inspire and influence generations of artists and music lovers.
Linah “Ebony” Ngcobo:
Linah Ngcobo, the South African music legend known as Ebony and Linah Khama, is a captivating example of a multifaceted career. Before captivating audiences as a pop icon, Linah honed her craft as a backing vocalist for renowned acts which laid the groundwork for her own explosive solo career.. With infectious music and electrifying tours, Ebony became the ultimate “pop diva” of the 80s.
Ebony’s influence extended beyond the stage. Not only did she cater to a wider audience with a Tshitsonga album under her birth name, Linah Khama, but her entrepreneurial spirit shone through managing the careers of her husband, the legendary maskandi musician Ihhashi Elimhlophe, and their children’s music group, Amaponi. Today, Linah’s life has taken a spiritual turn as she serves as the senior pastor at God’s Pearl Ministries. Her story is one of remarkable transformation, leaving an enduring legacy as a singer, businesswoman, and spiritual leader.
Linah Ngcobo said: “I Am humbled by this recognition especially coming from Woman to Woman with Love. And Im inspired to continue this journey to celebrate generations of women who paved the way, using music as a force for good.”
Mercy Pakela:
Mercy Pakela stormed the scene in the 80s with her electrifying energy and infectious hits like Ayashisa Amateki. Nicknamed the “Queen of Pantsula”, Mercy’s powerful voice captivated audiences for decades.
Driven by a musical dream, Mercy embarked on a bold journey at 16, hitchhiking from Port Elizabeth (currently known as Qgeberha) to Johannesburg. Undeterred, she found her footing, honing her talent and performing with established artists. In 1985, her debut album launched her career, and with her signature wacky style and electrifying performances, Mercy became a force to be reckoned with. Over 30 years in the industry, Mercy continues to leave her mark. From chart-topping hits like Ndizo Kulinda and Taximan to stadium anthems like Soccer City, her music continues to resonate with fans across generations. Mercy Pakela is a testament to dedication, passion, and the enduring power of music.
