Woolworths Embarks on Vision 2025+: A Bold Strategy for Sustainability

Woolworths has unveiled its Vision 2025+, a forward-thinking strategy aimed at achieving ambitious sustainability goals and inspiring inclusive growth. Building on the foundation of its groundbreaking Good Business Journey programme, initiated in 2007, Woolworths aspires to become one of the world’s most responsible retailers.

A Decade of Progress and a New Vision

The Good Business Journey has been instrumental in driving Woolworths’ vision, yielding significant environmental and societal benefits. In the past year, Woolworths evaluated its sustainability progress and introduced Vision 2025+, setting the stage for the next phase of its journey. A key component of this vision is the Inclusive Justice Initiative, which aims to foster inclusive growth for all stakeholders, including employees, customers, and communities.

Vision 2025+ Commitments

Woolworths’ new goals are comprehensive, focusing on three main areas: environmental sustainability, supply chain transparency and ethics, and the well-being of people. These goals are designed to stretch the company’s capabilities and encourage collaborative efforts with various partners, such as industry leaders, suppliers, customers, employees, government, businesses, and NGOs.

Environmental and Supply Chain Targets

The environmental and supply chain commitments of Woolworths Group under Vision 2025+ include:

Achieving net zero carbon impact by 2040.

Sourcing all energy from renewable sources by 2030.

Establishing a fully traceable and transparent supply chain by 2025.

Ensuring all packaging is reusable or recyclable.

Designing all private label fashion and home products to be reused, repaired, resold, or recycled by 2025.

Societal Change and Inclusive Growth

In addition to environmental targets, Vision 2025+ emphasizes the need for societal change, a need highlighted by the Covid-19 pandemic. Through the Inclusive Justice Initiative, Woolworths reaffirms its commitment to diversity and inclusion, enhancing a sense of belonging among employees, customers, and communities.

Future-Proofing the Business

Achieving these ambitious goals is crucial for future-proofing Woolworths. By making the business more resilient and adaptable to change, these efforts are expected to have a positive impact on both the environment and society. The Good Business Journey has already had a significant financial impact, with nearly R2 billion in savings since its inception, alongside global and national recognition for sustainability achievements.

Inspiring Collaboration and Creativity

While Vision 2025+ presents challenging targets, Woolworths is confident that these goals will foster collaboration, creativity, and problem-solving among all stakeholders. The commitment to these goals not only strengthens Woolworths’ sustainability credentials but also ensures the greater good of the planet and its people.

Through Vision 2025+, Woolworths is poised to inspire a collective effort towards a more sustainable and inclusive future, setting a benchmark for responsible retailing globally.
