Recognising the importance of skills development that facilitates access to employment opportunities, Loeriesfontein community leaders collaborated with the local wind farms to successfully implement a ‘Learners and Drivers’ License Programme’. Designed to empower the youth with vital skills and qualifications, this collaborative effort aims to equip them for success in various aspects of life.
This initiative was in response to the community’s expressed need for assistance in obtaining learner’s and driver’s licenses. and, in turn, garnered significant interest amongst local youth.
“This programme exemplifies the commitment to fostering sustainable development and empowerment within the community. By providing access to skills and essential qualifications, we are not only facilitating the enhancement of individual livelihoods which in turn, strengthensthe fabric of the community,” explained Vanessa Fredericks,Economic Development Manager for Loeriesfontein and Khobab Wind Farms, funders of the programme.
The first phase of the programme targeted 30 individuals from the community, with over 60% of the participants successfully obtaining their learner’s licenses, valid for two years.
Partnering with a service provider based in the nearby town of Calvinia, the programme conducted comprehensive classroom sessions focused on the K53 curriculum. These sessions equipped participants with the necessary knowledge and preparation to excel in the learner’s license examination.
“My experience was an enriching one that taught me valuable insights about the road and the learner’s license. The classes were not only informative but also tailored in a way that made them accessible to everyone. I feel fully prepared and at ease to take the next step, which is obtaining my driver’s license,” said Anke O’neill, one of the programme participants.
Looking ahead, this collaborative effort remains committed to supporting the 21 individuals who have obtained their learner’s licenses as they progress towards acquiring their driver’s licenses. Through ongoing mentorship and guidance, these individuals will further enhance their prospects for employment and contribute positively to the development of the community.
