GirlCode empowers change across Africa with 10th Annual Hackathon

GirlCode, a leading organisation dedicated to fostering diversity and inclusivity in the tech industry, is thrilled to announce its 10th annual GirlCode Hackathon: Empowering Change Across Africa. This year’s event, scheduled for 31 August – 1 September, aims to leverage technology to address the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs) while actively promoting female participation in the tech sector.

In its 10th edition, the GirlCode Hackathon is poised to make a significant impact by expanding its reach across 10 African cities, establishing a continent-wide platform for innovation and collaboration. This transformative initiative, propelled by GirlCode’s commitment to positive change, aims to develop working Minimum Viable Products (MVPs) aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs).

The hackathon has already garnered strong support, notably from partners like South Africa’s leading fibre network operator, Vuma, whose unwavering commitment has played a pivotal role in the event’s growth. From its initial presence in Johannesburg to now having a footprint in three cities in South Africa, the collaboration with Vuma has not only expanded its geographical reach but has also facilitated life-changing opportunities for participants. Impressively, past participants have earned the chance to attend Global Women in Tech conferences and have successfully secured job opportunities.

GirlCode invites forward-thinking companies to join as sponsors, acknowledging the collaborative strength that has propelled the hackathon to its current success and looking forward to further advancements on this impactful journey.

Companies who join as sponsors will be able to gain exposure across 10 African countries and position themselves as a champion of positive change and innovation. The hackathon also presents an opportunity to connect with top-tier talent in the technology and innovation space, with a focus on supporting and empowering women in STEM fields.

“We believe that technology has the power to shape a better future, and through the GirlCode Hackathon, we are inviting companies to join us in making a meaningful impact on the tech industry and contributing to positive change across the African continent. Together, let’s empower change across Africa and build a more inclusive and sustainable future,” said Zandile Mkwanazi, CEO at GirlCode.
