Bloemfontein learners find joy in sport thanks to Windmill sponsorship

A three-month sports development sponsorship by Windmill Casino allowed around 1 500 learners at two Bloemfontein schools to involve themselves in the joy of sport.

The R35 000 programme ran from September to November 2023 at Lereko Secondary school and Eersteling Primary school, facilitated by Super Kids, who have run coaching and training camps in Bloemfontein and nationally for the past 27 years.

The sporting codes focused on soccer, rugby, netball, cricket, tennis, golf, athletics, and hockey, and allowed learners to grasp the basic concepts of their chosen sport. “Learners were excited to have the opportunity to learn ball skills, whether it was catching a rugby ball, kicking a soccer ball, bouncing a netball ball or getting to grips with hockey sticks,” said Hendrik Ras, owner and manager of  Superkids.

The programme also aimed to develop girls in certain sport codes and identify learners who excel at certain sports for further development.

Johan Oosthuizen, Windmill Casino General Manager said the sponsorship aligned with Sun International’s socio-economic development focus on education and sports. “You could see how the kids really had a sense of satisfaction from learning something new, and there are so many benefits to playing sport, outside of the obvious health benefits, such as teamwork. We really hope the physical exercise was enjoyed by all of the learners at Lereko and Eersteling.”
