To improve access to quality healthcare for learners, more than 5,000 healthcare services have been successfully delivered to schools and community members across the Matlosana and Maquassi Hills Local Municipalities this year. This has not only filled the service gap in these two municipal areas, which are hindered by the Department of Health’s limited coverage, but the programme has also extended its support to include the local clinic in Kanana, further benefiting a number of community members.
Speaking to Mr. Kanyetsi, the Principal of Maitemogelo Comprehensive School, he shared the impact of this initiative on his school, “The project was very beneficial to our learners and the school. About 76 learners were screened, 32 learners received health education, three learners were referred for various ailments, 14 learners needed oral hygiene, and eight were treated for eye care issues or recommended for glasses. We are very pleased with the programme and hope to continue working together.”
Since its inception in 2021, this programme, which Bokamoso Solar funds in collaboration with the District Department of Health, has been dedicated to providing free and accessible healthcare services to local primary and high school learners, including primary healthcare, oral healthcare, optometry services, health education, and follow-up care.
Having initially targeted Grade 1 and Grade 8 learners, in alignment with the Department of Health’s Integrated School Health Programme, the programme has expanded its reach to other grades and even serving local community members during school holidays.
“This initiative addresses immediate healthcare needs and aims to improve children’s health, reduce health barriers to learning, and promote positive attitudes and behaviours that will benefit learners’ current and future health. It is a testament to our commitment to supporting and enhancing the well-being of the communities we serve,” stated Claire Phutieagae, Community Liaison Officer for Bokamoso Solar.
The services provided included: primary healthcare services; oral healthcare services; optometry services with free spectacles being issued for learners and community members; health education including sexual reproductive health topics; and referrals for further care for those identified.
