Following the weekend’s flash floods in the Eastern Cape, the Shoprite Group joined hands with disaster relief group, the Gift of the Givers, to bring relief to affected community members in East London.
The Shoprite Group dispatched a Shoprite Mobile Soup Kitchen to serve warm meals to those displaced and affected by the floods and will remain in the affected area for as long as necessary.
The group also packed food parcels containing cooking oil, instant soup, rice, samp, beans and other non-perishable food items and handed them to the Gift of the Givers for distribution to displaced and affected families. Stationery packs were also donated.
The floods have killed at least 10 people, including a police officer who was conducting rescue and recovery operations at the time, and left hundreds homeless since the weekend as rivers burst their banks and roads were inundated. Several media houses reported that hundreds of homes had been washed away in the informal settlements just outside the city, especially the Mdantsane township.
“The Shoprite Group has always been committed to supporting communities in need and we will always avail our resources to help when disaster strikes, especially in the communities we serve. We remain in close contact with Gift of the Givers and authorities on the ground regarding the disaster relief efforts and will assist for as long as necessary,” said Sanjeev Raghubir, sustainability manager at the Shoprite Group.
