Loeriesfontein maths programme boosts confidence

Teachers and learners in Loeriesfontein recently attended a maths acceleration programme and were equipped with resources and improved methodology to tackle and demystify mathematics. The seven maths teachers and 140 Grade 8 to Grade 12 learners from Loeriesfontein High School, attended the two-day workshop in May, aimed at significantly improving maths results, and began applying their new skills in the classroom straight away.

“The seminar gave me a new perspective on mathematics and demonstrated how learners can overcome barriers to learning, which is very useful to me as a teacher. I can confidently say that I am better equipped to help learners increase their marks and that the learners have been equipped with the skills to better communicate in maths,” said Mr Eddie Sampson, Grades 8 and Grade 9 mathematics teacher, and Head of Department at Loeriesfontein High School.

The ‘Effective Maths Teaching Seminar’ has been funded by Loeriesfontein Wind Farm and Khobab Wind Farm and delivered by My Maths Buddy. The tailored resources provided to teachers and learners, provide additional support for an Accelerated Maths Learning with Understanding environment.

“We are supporting this project as part of our commitment to improving STEM education (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) in the Loeriesfontein community. Together with other teaching interventions, learner support and the funding of new classroom technology, we hope to enable better and more enhanced teaching environments,” explained Vanessa Fredericks, Economic Development Manager for Loeriesfontein Wind Farm and Khobab Wind Farm.

Another maths teacher, Mr Divan Erasmus, had this to say, “The My Maths Buddy programme is very effective in helping teachers to be better Maths educators, and it is very helpful to understand your learners better.”
