Join the race to end GBVF

Every year, South Africans commemorate women’s month through out the month of August. This year, women can take a stand against Gender Based Violence and Femicide(GBVF) by taking part in a virtual race. Gender Based Violence Activist, Sabrina Walter launched the Women For Change campaign in 2016 through her organization called Catch Me If You Can (CMIYC).

CMIYC hosts races, challenges and weekly group runs to keep women healthy and fit. Through this organization, women have formed long lasting friendships, created a healthier lifestyle and reached their running milestones through their participation in CMIYC events.

The Women For Change race will see female runners uniting on the 9th of August to protect each other and to stand up against gender-based violence and femicide.

“Women For Change creates awareness to end GBVF through nationwide running events and awareness campaigns. Our running events also support non-profit organisations (NPOs) that work on the frontline of GBVF, such as Rape Crisis, Tears Foundation or The Safe House,” explained Walter.

“We use our social media channels daily to educate our society, support those NPOs that help survivors and create awareness nationally and globally,” she added. Furthermore, Walter described GBVF as South Africa’s real epidemic and says the number of incidents is unacceptable.

“The fight to end GBVF in South Africa is long overdue. Women do not feel safe. We are all affected by crime, directly or indirectly – therefore, everyone should be active in demanding change,” she said.
Walter hopes to keep the conversation going and create a platform where women can unite for change and educate each other.

Due to the Coronavirus and lockdown regulations, the campaign has launched Women’s Virtual Challenges and Races. Last year, over 10 000 women joined virtual events in 2020.This year’s Women For Change 5 and 10km virtual race entries will open in May and women, men and children are invited to participate.
